DIFFERENT HUE OF BLUE: COLOUR CHANGE IN FRANCE’S FLAG
by Riyaa Palan
According to officials, French President Emmanuel Macron has switched to using a darker shade of navy blue on the official flag of France, replacing the previous brighter one.
Macron had intended to bring the navy blue flag back which was a symbol of the French Revolution. However, both the darker as well as lighter flags have been in use for decades. The Navy of France and many other official buildings around the country have been using the navy blue shade.
Although, in 1976, under the then President Giscard d’Estaing, the French state had introduced a brighter blue on the tricolour to match it with the shade on the European flag.
The aesthetical factor had a partial influence on the decision since the French and European flags flew next to each other in so many different places.
There were some disagreements over Macron’s change to navy blue reportedly, with some arguing that the revised shade was ugly and it would clash with the EU flag while others were simply nostalgic for the pre-1976 version.
All those concerned insisted that the colour change shouldn’t be seen as an anti-EU gesture, reports from Europe 1 stated.
Deaf Football Team Takes California By Storm
by Kaeya Merchant
At California School for the Deaf Riverside the athletic program has been through it’s fair share of humiliation over the years. Once a coach from a visiting team mocked the deaf players behind their backs to his own team. Another time a hearing coach for the dead girl basketball team had to listen to the opposing team discuss the embarrassment they felt at having lost to a deaf team.
The boys varsity football team, the Cubs, had suffered seven losing seasons so you can imagine they felt it would be an easy win for the opposing team. Their morale lay in spreads and tatters on the ground. This season they took it back, they have become the highest ranked team in their South California division, winning 11 games in a row!
In the second round of playoffs on Friday night, the Cubs flattened the Desert Christina Knights, winning with a score of 84-12. What might surprise you is that the Cubs had put their second-string players in for the entirety of the second half!
The school’s physical education teacher, Keith Adams, a deaf man who's got two deaf sons on the team, led the Cubs. The team itself had developed a system of coded hand signals to communicate between themselves and the coaches destroyed their opponents with their plays, speed and efficiency.
Counting Friday’s win means that the Cubs are now two games away from getting the division championship. If they were to win it then this would be the first time in the school’s 68 year history they’d won it. Despite the looming upcoming matches that could potentially mean win or lose for the championship the coaches and team already feel like winners.
