AIRPORT SHUTDOWN IN SPAIN
by Ishana Katriar
Airport Palma de Mallorca was shut down for nearly 4 hours when around 21 people were found to be using a plane that was flying from Casablanca in Morocco to Istanbul (Turkey) to enter the country illegally.
The plane holding these illegal migrants was flying from Casablanca and was meant to land directly in Turkey but landed at Palma de Mallorca due to a medical emergency. As the airplane landed suddenly in Spain, 21 passengers made a quick exit. They ran off and apparently escaped over the fence. Police have arrested 12 out of these 21 and the rest are still on the run, but Police is confident that they will be caught eventually.
While most of the illegal migrants were caught, the major question that needs to be answered is why they wanted to escape. Police is still conducting investigation to understand how and why the escape took place. Was it a spur-of-the-moment occurrence or was it a plan that was made beforehand? The medical emergency that led to people fleeing was a real emergency. A Moroccan man apparently went into a diabetic coma, which was the reason for the report of a medical emergency.
The man was arrested when officials found him to be fit and healthy. Other passengers have disappeared though. Because of this incident, around 60 flights, (both national and international) were delayed or canceled.
The investigation continues. What happened? Why did they do this? What actions will be taken? Only time can tell.
