The Floods in Assam
By Ahana Barthwal
The floods in Assam are nowhere close to settling. In fact, rising water levels in the rivers of Barak and Brahmaputra are inundating more areas, and have impacted more than 55 lakh people over 32 districts.
Eight-nine lives have been lost due to the floods since mid-May, while a citizen of Kamrup has been reported missing.
The town of Nagaon has been massively affected by the ongoing wave of deluges. Over 4,57,381 people have suffered the first-hand implications of the floods, and 15,188 occupants are taking shelter in over 157 relief camps.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarja recently travelled to Nagaon to see the severe repercussions of the floods for himself.
“Undertook a train journey from Guwahati to flood-affected areas in Chaparmukh and Kampur. The journey enabled me to take a closer look at the areas ravaged by flood along the railway tracks, which will help us in taking informed decisions and intervene accordingly," Tweeted Mr. Sarma.
The National Disaster Response Force has been engaged in evacuating people from the Cachar districts to safe places, meanwhile personnel from the State Disaster Response Force and additional agencies have been deployed in the remaining districts.
In all, 2,16,851 were hit by the flood from the 506 villages located in Cachar district, 1,47,649 from Karimganj, and virtually 1 lakh in Hailakandi.
The worst affected districts, according to the bulletin, include Barpeta, for 12,51,359 people there are being forced to stagger through flood water, while there are 5,94,708 in Dhubri and 5,47,421 in Darrang.
These cataclysmic floods, born from ceaseless rainfall, have impacted the lives of those in 5,577 villages and 121 revenue circles. Assam needs your help, now more than ever.
